Design Challenge

Increase user friendliness of Lex, enabling people to quickly obtain multiple rewrite options.

UI Sample of the rewrite design proposal.
Situation
Lex AI is a powerful conversational interface for building chatbots and voice applications. I enjoy using the rewriting feature to quickly test various ways to say something and express it more precisely. This design challenge demonstrates the existing Lex rewrite tool, its current usability issues, and a proposes a prototype for a power user which could user tested and optimized for launch.
Task
Design a faster way for experienced users to get the most out of the rewrite feature by enhancing the usability and simplicity of content rewriting.
Usability
Analysis
Action
Create an interaction sequence that optimizes the "rewrite" feature and build a prototype for user testing. The idea is that power users will prefer Lex over Google Docs and other legacy programs due to its ability to facilitate quick rewrites.
Interaction
Sequence
  • Highlight the desired text
  • Press keyboard shortcut "⌘ R"
  • Visual indication of rewrite in progress
  • Accept or Rewrite
A proposed workflow for keyboard shortcuts to quick rewrite text.
UX Propsal
Figma
Components
  • Rewrite Card
  • Star animation sequence
  • Simple button interaction states
  • Standard LEX UI branded elements
The Figma components used to build the interactive prototype.
User Testing
After constructing the prototype, it's time to conduct the experiment with a real user. I would provide them with a scenario and have them use the prototype. During usability testing, it's important to ask the user to verbalize their thoughts and actions. I pay close attention to their intended path and any alternate routes they take. Observing if they were successful in the primary task or were they confused?

Then we take all the insights into the next version of the prototype and iterate towards an MVP.
